Atari announces The 800XL 8-bit computer recreation launching in 2027

Atari has announced the The 800XL, a full-sized recreation of its classic 8-bit home computer designed by Retro Games Ltd. Manufactured and distributed by Plaion Replai, the unit is now available for pre-order, with shipping scheduled to begin on April 23rd, 2027.

The The 800XL retains the design of the original console, featuring a full-sized mechanical keyboard, a functional cartridge slot, and built-in Atari Basic programming. Connectivity options include an HDMI output supporting PAL 50Hz and NTSC 60Hz, with 4:3 or pixel-perfect display modes and optional CRT filters. The system is powered via USB-C, while four USB-A ports support external storage and controllers.

Users can access 25 pre-installed games, plus two hidden titles unlocked with an analogue controller. Beyond the included library, the computer supports side-loading games and applications for the Atari 400, 800, XL, XE, and Atari 5200 via USB drives or physical cartridges. Atari says the hardware includes modern QoL features, including four save slots per game and a 30-second gameplay rewind function.

Retro Games Ltd includes the Thecxstick joystick, an updated version of the original controller fitted with seven additional action buttons. The box includes a USB-A to USB-C power cable, an HDMI cable, and a Quick Guide. Pre-orders are open through atari.com and plaionreplai.com, priced at £199.99/$219.99/€219.99.

KitGuru says: Bringing back the The 800XL with modern HDMI output and side-loading capabilities should appeal to retro computing enthusiasts. Would you like to get one of these?
