Embark Studios has announced a major update to the environment destruction system in The Finals. Detailed in a recent video by gameplay programmer Roman Smirnov and senior game designer Tim Overvliet, the update is scheduled to arrive on October 20th.
The Finals already has great destruction physics in place, but the current system relies on two layers, one for structural integrity of map elements and then one layer for debris. The new patch adds a ‘gradual' destruction layer to create more dynamic connections between parts of buildings. That means buildings should be able to deform, rather than collapsing entirely as soon as the destruction threshold has been met.
The end result should be more tilted floors, twisted corridors and sagging rooms while fighting in and around buildings on each map.
Alongside structural changes, the studio is tweaking smoke and poisonous gas mechanics. Environmental clouds will interact naturally with destroyed geometry, preventing gas and smoke from clipping through solid walls. Players can now also use explosions to clear smoke from an area temporarily.
