Riot shows off ‘Project L’ – its upcoming League of Legends 2D fighter

Over the last few years, Riot Games has been expanding beyond League of Legends and into new genres, from card games to competitive shooters. Soon, Riot will be adding a fighting game to that list, known as Project L.

Project L was initially announced alongside Valorant a couple of years ago as part of Riot's efforts to expand its player base and grow the League of Legends IP. Project L will be a 2D fighter, taking inspiration from the likes of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, and unlike Valorant, this game will be set in the LoL universe, using characters from the original MOBA.

In the video above, you can see the first gameplay footage of the game in action, released as part of Riot's celebration of Arcane, a Netflix animated series based on League of Legends, which just aired its final episode.

We can already see a handful of popular League characters in the game and it appears each fighter will have their own unique move set. This will be a team-based fighting game, so players will each pick two champions before battling it out. While core gameplay has been established with Project L, and the game is up and running internally at Riot, there is still more work to be done and with that in mind, there is no set release date yet.

KitGuru Says: Riot has been working on Project L for a long time now, so it's nice to finally see the game in action. So far, Riot's other spin-offs have been successful, so it will be interesting to see if the studio can also get the backing of the fighting game community when this releases.
