Returnal’s 2.0 update finally lets you save the game

While returnal was initially celebrated as a major milestone for the team at Housemarque, one of the few issues that fans had with the game was the fact that you could not pause a game mid-run and save it. This was especially bad when considering the fact that the game suffered from common crashes – and runs could last as long as 3 hours. Now, the team at Housemarque have finally fixed this with the game’s 2.0 update – as well as adding a few extra features.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Returnal’s Game Director – Harry Krueger – said “Hello everyone! Over the last few months, we have been having a great time seeing you play Returnal and learning about your experiences, and hearing all the great stories of how players are overcoming the myriad challenges of Atropos. It’s had a fantastic reception, and we are truly pleased and grateful to see people having so much fun with the game. Here at Housemarque we’ve been listening to all your feedback too, and so it is with great satisfaction that I’m here to announce our update 2.0, launching today.”

Returnal’s big 2.0 update comes with two major features. The first is a photo mode, which offers a comprehensive list of tweakable camera features, including focal distance, aperture, saturation and contrast. You can even add in new light sources, allowing you to compose photos exactly how you want it.

The main addition with this update is the Suspend Cycle feature. This will allow you to “pause your cycle to be continued later, letting you exit the game and turn off your console without losing your progress in that session.”

The way this works is that “by suspending the cycle, Returnal will simply create a single use suspend point, and once you resume playing the suspend point is deleted and cannot be used again”. Returnal is intended to be a tough experience, and so adding a traditional save function would hinder the creative intent of the game. Therefore, this Suspend Cycle functionality looks to be a good compromise, allowing you to play Returnal with that extra sense of security. As someone who had their own run ruined after a crash 3 hours in, I welcome this feature.
