Sony reportedly in talks to acquire Paramount

Of the major US film and TV distribution companies, one of the biggest is Paramount. Known most recently in the gaming space for their work on the Sonic the Hedgehog films and spin-off show, new reports have claimed that media giant Sony might be in talks to acquire the company.

As reported by The New York Times, “Sony Pictures Entertainment and Apollo Global Management, an investment firm, have been in discussions about teaming up for a joint bid to acquire Paramount.”

According to the publication, Paramount remains in talks with Skydance for some type of merger or acquisition, and so Sony’s plans may not come to fruition.

That said, assuming it does, The New York Times has reported that “One structure could have Apollo take a minority stake in the joint venture, with Sony becoming the majority owner and operating the company” – eventually selling its minority stake to Sony for full ownership.

Paramount has been making quite big moves in recent years, with the launch of their own subscription service alongside multiple successful video game adaptations.

Add to this all the various IPs which Paramount own – The Addams Family; The Godfather; Mission: Impossible; Top Gun; TMNT, Transformers; all of Nickelodeon and more – and this acquisition could give Sony lots of toys to play with across all mediums.
