MSI GT780DXR 17.3″ Laptop review

A very important part of overall system responsiveness is down to hard drive performance. We use two of our favourite benchmark utilities Crystalmark X64 Edition and HD Tach to rate performance from the onboard SATA controller.

MSI aren't using a Solid State Drive in this particular version of the GT780DXR and as such we can't expect class leading performance. Still, to help improve overall speeds they have configured the two drives in RAID 0. Overall sequential throughput is decent, at around 200 MB/s in both sequential read and write tests.

The ATTO Disk Benchmark performance measurement tool is compatible with Microsoft Windows. Measure your storage systems performance with various transfer sizes and test lengths for reads and writes. Several options are available to customize your performance measurement including queue depth, overlapped I/O and even a comparison mode with the option to run continuously. Use ATTO Disk Benchmark to test any manufacturers RAID controllers, storage controllers, host adapters, hard drives and SSD drives and notice that ATTO products will consistently provide the highest level of performance to your storage.

ATTO mirrors the results in CrystalDiskMark, peaking at around 200 MB/s in both the read and write tests.

In the real world, we found the system to be quite responsive, although it still felt sluggish when compared directly against the Sony Z series we reviewed a short while ago, which featured Dual SSD in a RAID 0 configuration.
