Steam breaks new user records

While we might not all be thrilled with the way Valve handled this year's Steam Summer Sale, in terms of getting people to play games, it was a resounding success. Over this weekend the digital distribution platform broke all previous records for concurrent players, topping eight million.

This is its biggest break out since December last year, when it broke through seven million. Just under a year before that, six million was the big news. Clearly Steam is becoming more and more popular and the recent Steam Summer Sale helped push it over the top.

The biggest title at the moment however isn't one of the big discounted ones sold over the past week or so, but DotA 2, which is pulling in around three quarters of a million players at its peak each day. Counter-Strike Global Offensive is the second most popular title at the moment, followed by Team Fortress 2, showing that Valve still dominates its own platform.

However price-slashed games like PayDay 2 and Skyrim are still pretty popular, though they draw in less than an 10th of DotA 2's numbers.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.

    Tomb Raider.
Just brilliant, and less than four quid!?
    Bonkers.

  2. I bought myself PayDay: The Heist (due to the weak computer, it barely works at ca. 30fps at lowest settings and resolution, but is playable; I have a lot of fun with this game :)), GTA Complete (which I’m surely gonna play for a long time) and Terraria (which’s also quite cool) during the Steam Summer Sale. I spent about 12 euro on all these games and I think that I spent it wisely – some people buy much more expensive games and play them only for a hour or two (some don’t play their games at all…).

Remember people – buy only what you’d like to play, respect your money 😉

Oh, and Kitguru: Yes, I did help Steam “taking Steam into new territory north of eight million players”. I was playing on 29.06 between 11:37 and 13:37 😀

  3. valve still dominates its own platform because its low end games are filled 10 year olds with shit computers
