Despite the studio being gutted, id Software are reportedly working on a new DOOM game

The recent announcement that Microsoft would be parting ways with up-to 5 of its previously-acquired studios, alongside its laying-off of over 3000 Xbox employees, has caused a great deal of concern regarding the future of Xbox Games Studios. Despite reports revealing that id Software have been heavily impacted (losing half of its workforce), insiders claim that a new DOOM game is currently in its early stages of development.

Last week, we reported on some of the impacts felt as a result of Microsoft’s mass gutting of Xbox, with the likes of id Software losing up to 50% of its employees – many of whom were said to have been responsible for work on the team’s highly-praised idTech game engine.

Despite all that has occurred, it seems Microsoft still wants id Software to churn out new games, with known industry insider Tom Warren taking to Twitter to claim: “while the id layoffs have been deep, I understand the changes haven't turned id into a support studio. Instead, they're now in the early stages of a new Doom game.”

Given the fact that half of the team are no longer there, including many who helped to evolve the idTech engine for each new release, it’s safe to assume that whatever the team are working on next won’t be able to match the size, scope, quality and technical proficiency seen with the recent DOOM trilogy.
