LG to sell 4mm thick 55 inch OLED TV’s in Q3 2012

LG Electronics have said that they hope to start selling the world's largest organic driven television in the second half of 2012. OLED, or organic light emitting diode panels give improved image quality when compared to current mainstream screens available on the market.

LG are the world's second largest TV manufacturer and they are set to showcase the new television at CES in Las Vegas in the coming weeks, according to Ken Hong, who spoke to Bloomberg.

OLED panels can be thinner in design, even when compared to leading LED designs currently available on the market with sharper image quality.

The release of new OLED screens may invigorate sales, which are flagging worldwide in recent months. DisplaySearch, a research company said that global shipments of LCD TVs hit 206 million last year, but this fell short of the 211 million predictions set earlier in the year.

The new LG 55 inch screen is said to be only 4 millimeters thick and will weigh around 7.5 kilograms. It will have 3D functionality and various web services, commonplace on televisions today. Other manufacturers will be set to announce models based on the same technology in the coming months.
