Nvidia Blackwell GPUs reportedly delayed due to “design flaws”

We may end up having to wait a bit longer to get our hands on Nvidia's latest Blackwell GPUs. According to sources, Blackwell is being delayed, potentially by several months, due to a design flaw spotted during the sampling phase.

Nvidia hasn't announced the release date for Blackwell yet, but it has already initiated the sampling of some units for its clients, according to The Information (via Bloomberg). The delay has apparently been communicated to Microsoft and some of Nvidia's other major partners for datacentre GPUs. The report indicates that Nvidia will need to take another look at Blackwell's chip design, go through verification again and then reintroduce the chip into production.

Due to this delay, larger shipments of Blackwell chips are not expected until Q1 2025. This is around the same time we were expecting to see the next-generation GeForce graphics cards as well. It is unclear if the Blackwell delay will have an impact on Nvidia's gaming-oriented products.

This delay might significantly impact the company, as it was expecting to ship close to half a million GPUs in 2024 alone and 1.5 million to 2 million in 2025. Considering each B100 GPU is sold at $30K-35K and the GB200 at $60K-70K, that's quite a lot of money that won't appear in the Q4 2024 financial report.
