‘Windows 12’ may just be the Windows 11 24H2 update

We might not get Windows 12 after all. According to a recent report, it seems that the AI-centric changes coming to Windows will arrive via a regular update to Windows 11, rather than an entire a new OS.

As per Windows Central, Microsoft is developing a major upgrade for Windows 11 called Hudson Valley. Expected to be released later this year as “version 24H2” or the 2024 update, it's rumoured to bring significant improvements over last year's version 23H2, including better performance, security, quality-of-life upgrades, and several new features.

The Hudson Valley update will focus on delivering next-generation AI experiences, which Microsoft has indicated interest in over the past year. According to insiders, this upgrade will introduce an updated Copilot that will leverage AI and machine learning to improve the Windows user experience and productivity across applications, search, and more. Microsoft is expected to finalise the 24H2 update during the summer and plans to release it in September.

Microsoft is testing some of the new features of the upcoming version via the Insider Canary Channel. Some of these features include improved Snap Layouts with machine learning that recommends frequently snapped applications for a more simplified user experience, the ability to create 7zip and TAR compressed archive files in File Explorer, a new refresh button for the Wi-Fi list, and a new “Energy Saver” mode that conserves energy on both battery-powered and plugged-in PCs.

Additionally, the Phone Link feature will be improved, enabling the use of a connected phone as a camera. Other general enhancements include a new “Install drivers” button on the Wi-Fi configuration page, removing some built-in Windows apps, and a new “Windows protected print mode” for Mopria-certified printers.

Although there was speculation that this upgrade may be branded as “Windows 12,” insiders suggest that it will most likely remain a Windows 11 update, especially after the departure of ex-Windows CEO Panos Panay.
