Fallout 76 hits 13 million players as series celebrates 25th anniversary

The Fallout series has had its ups and downs, and while Fallout 76 certainly represents one of the lowest moments for the franchise, it also shows how even the worst-reviewed games can claw itself back into players’ good books – with the game now surpassing 13 million players.

October 2022 represents the 25th anniversary of the Fallout franchise, with the first entry in the series releasing all the way back in 1997. Of course, the franchise has seen a wide and sweeping number of changes across this time, going from an isometric single player title to now being a live-service first/third person shooter.

As part of the anniversary, Bethesda will be hosting month-long celebrations, including but not limited to offering a free play week of Fallout 76, with Bethesda saying “Haven’t taken a dive into Fallout 76? Explore post-nuclear Appalachia (and, following the game’s recent Expeditions update, The Pitt) with your friends at no additional charge during Fallout 76’s Free Play Week, starting October 4 to October 11.”

As part of this, it was also revealed that the live-service title has managed to amass an audience of 13 million players since its release all the way back in 2018. This represents a small bump over last year, with the game having added an additional 2 million players since figures were previously reported this time last year.

It is unknown whether this figure represents game sales or total players through the likes of Game Pass and such. Either way, it is encouraging to see Fallout 76 shedding its reputation of old, and that Bethesda’s commitment to the game has been rewarded in tow.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
