Sony reportedly planning PS5 Slim with detachable disc drive

Every console generation, we eventually see smaller and slimmer redesigns. With the upcoming PS5 revision, we could see Sony move away from the disc and digital versions of the PS5 we've seen so far. Instead, Sony would offer a detachable disc drive for the console, which could help cut down on production costs.

Writing for Insider Gaming, Tom Henderson reports that sources familiar with Sony's plans have said that a new PS5 revision will be coming next year and will “completely replace” the current PS5 chassis. In its place, a new version of the console will be made with an extra USB-C port on the back of the console. This will be used for a detachable disc drive, removing extra bulk from the system's chassis.

The plan seems to be to sell the new, slim PS5 on its own, as well as in a bundle with the disc drive included. The disc drives will also be available separately, so if you choose to go digital-only in the beginning, you can add the ability to play physical media later.

It is claimed that this disc drive will attach to the console in a way that hides the fact that it is an external add-on. Once all is said and done, this version of the PS5 should be easier to manufacture, which will in turn help Sony address demand for PS5 consoles.

KitGuru Says: There was an add-on disc drive for the Xbox 360 back in the day, so this is an idea that has been explored before. Do you think Sony should continue selling a disc and digital version of the PS5? Or do you think the external disc drive add-on makes more sense?

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
