New AMD Preview Driver improves DX11 performance by up to 17%

With the Radeon RX 6×50 XT series launch, AMD has also released its latest Preview Driver, bringing new optimisations and features, including performance improvements for games using the DX11 API. So far, the improvement seems promising, with some significant performance gains in certain titles.

Although DX12 is slowly becoming the new standard, DX11 is still widely used across the games industry, making these improvements relevant. According to AMD, users will notice a 3-17% performance improvement in DX11-based games with this new driver. The following list shows some titles where you'll see the performance gains:

  • Far Cry 5 – at 4% gains
  • Farming Simulator 22 – at 3% gains
  • Total War Saga: Troy – at 17% gains
  • Total War Hammer 3 – at 5% gains
  • Watch Dogs Legion – at 10% gains
  • The Witcher 3 – at 3% gains
  • Apex Legends – at 5% gains
  • Overwatch – at 3% gains
  • PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS – at 3% gains
  • Valorant – at 7% gains

CapFrameX tried the new driver first-hand to verify the performance gains, while also trying other titles that were not on AMD's list. As it turns out, AMD should have included Crysis Remastered in its own benchmark list, as the new driver increases performance in that game by as much as 24%.

The new AMD preview driver also features a new version (1.1) of Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) technology, which adds an adjustable sharpening filter.

KitGuru says: Considering the various two-digit performance gains coming with the new driver, select Radeon RX 6000 series cards may now have the jump over the competition. It seems reviewers will have to update their numbers.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
