Apple will sell iPhone and Mac parts so users can self-repair devices at home

After years of fighting against customer's right to repair, Apple is taking a step in the right direction. Today, Apple announced plans to start selling its own parts and tools for users to repair their devices at home.

To start off with, Apple will release repair parts for the iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and Macs featuring the M1 processor. More parts will become available over time, but for now, Apple is focusing on the most commonly repaired components, such as the display, battery or camera.

Aside from selling tools and parts for at-home repairs, Apple will also roll out instruction manuals for performing each repair. Unfortunately, we do not yet know how much these parts will cost when buying through Apple, or how the price will compare to taking your device to an Apple-certified repair centre.

Apple's “Self Service Repair” program will launch in early 2022 in the US, followed by other countries later in the year.

KitGuru Says: Apple is getting on the right side of this, allowing those with the knowledge to make repairs themselves rather than relying on repair centres. We'll have to wait and see how much the parts end up costing though.
