Infinity Ward to launch Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 this year

In the wake of Microsoft's proposed $70 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the publisher has been making some interesting announcements. Not only have we received information on new games from Blizzard, but we're also getting some early confirmation on this year's Call of Duty, with Infinity Ward now confirmed to be handling the 2022 release.

Just as expected, Infinity Ward will be behind Call of Duty 2022, which will usher in “a new generation” for the series. While the studio did not confirm it is working on Modern Warfare 2, there have been enough leaks around the game pointing in that direction.

During Activision Blizzard's quarterly earnings call, the publisher said that it is currently working on “the most ambitious plan” in Call of Duty's history. As reported by VGC, sources with knowledge of the game's development have revealed much of what this plan includes.

Currently, It is expected that Modern Warfare 2 will launch later this year, alongside another full refresh and a new map for Warzone.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
