PUBG: Battlegrounds is going free-to-play

PUBG: Battlegrounds is not only the catalyst that spawned the current trend of battle royale games, but in doing so landed itself as one of the best selling games of all time. After 4 years on the market, PUBG: Battlegrounds is going free-to-play.

Making the announcement, the Product Marketing Manager at Krafton – John Yang – said “Throughout the years, PUBG: Battlegrounds has seen so many changes. We’re proud of all the improvements our little game has seen over the years, but now it’s time for the game to make its biggest leap of all: free to play.”

Explaining this decision, Yang claimed that “Battlegrounds free-to-play now gives us the opportunity to expand our community even more and bring all the thrills of PUBG and battle royale to everyone, while providing new friends, and let’s be honest, more targets for our existing player base.”

Described as “our natural next step,” the shift to free-to-play will also be aligned with “several improvements we’ve been working on, with some of those focused on our new players.”

Those who purchased the game will not be forgotten however. A ‘Special Commemorative Pack’ is being gifted to all those with a purchased copy of PUBG and includes “seven cosmetic items and access to Battlegrounds Plus, which unlocks all of the game’s features while providing some account boosts.”

PUBG: Battlegrounds free-to-play launches on the 12th of January 2022. The original game is one of the best-selling games of all time, having moved 70 million units since launch. While a huge achievement, it does not compare to many F2P offerings – many of which have seen in excess of 300 million players.

With 70 million people willing to pay for PUBG, it will be interesting to see just how many will be willing to download it for free.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
