New LPDDR5X standard pushes memory up to 8533Mbps

JEDEC has just published its new standard for LPDDR5X memory, an extension of LPDDR5 that aims to deliver improved performance and higher efficiency for mobile memory. 

The updated LPDDR5 memory standard was designed to improve performance, power consumption and flexibility, resulting in improved efficiency on LPDDR5-powered devices, including smartphones, IoT devices, and AI applications. The new standard increases memory frequency considerably, from 6400Mbps to 8533Mbps. Moreover, it also improves signal integrity with TX/RX equalisation and reliability through the new Adaptive Refresh Management feature, protecting the SDRAM's integrity.

The LPDDR5X memory standard is aimed at 5G applications, automotive, augmented/virtual reality and edge computing. As an extension of LPDDR5, the new memory standard offers higher bandwidth than the non-X standard, which will be crucial for the 5G development.

Various companies have already shown their support for the new standard, including Micron, Samsung, and Synopsys.

KitGuru says: We still have to wait a bit before getting our hands on the first devices powered by LPDDR5X memory, but considering how fast mobile SoCs are evolving, we suspect that the first devices will arrive in 2022.
