UK government intervenes in Nvidia acquisition of ARM

The UK government is intervening with Nvidia's planned acquisition of ARM. While Nvidia remains confident that the deal will close sometime in 2022, the UK government is claiming concerns over national security.

UK Digital Secretary, Oliver Dowden, stated today that the government has officially issued an intervention notice. The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will now “prepare a report with advice on jurisdictional and competition issues” that could arise if Nvidia were to complete its acquisition of ARM.

While ARM is currently owned by Japanese firm, SoftBank, the company itself is based in Cambridge, UK and is a major part of the tech industry. While competition has been raised as a concern by rival tech companies, the UK seems to have additional concerns around national security: “We want to support our thriving UK tech industry and welcome foreign investment, but it is appropriate that we properly consider the national security implications of a transaction like this”, Dowden said.

If the Digital Secretary decides that the acquisition would not impact public interest, then it will go through as usual. If there are concerns, then ‘phase two' of the investigation will begin, which could result in the UK blocking the merger.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
