Nvidia reportedly in ‘advanced talks’ to acquire ARM

Recently, word began spreading that Nvidia was ‘interested' in acquiring chip company ARM. Since then, the situation appears to have escalated a bit, with new reports indicating that Nvidia is actually in ‘advanced talks' to buy the company.

ARM is currently owned by Japanese firm, SoftBank Group. The idea of offloading ARM to another company has been floating around for a while now and it looks like Nvidia could be the best suitor. According to a Bloomberg report citing sources familiar with the matter.

According to the sources, Nvidia and SoftBank hope to reach a deal within the next few weeks and that currently, Nvidia is the only company in “concrete discussions” about an acquisition.

SoftBank first acquired ARM back in 2016 for $32 billion. It is estimated that a new deal for the company could be the largest ever in the semiconductor industry. It is also a complicated acquisition, as not only would regulator approval be required, but many ARM clients, like Qualcomm, Apple and other tech giants, would need some assurances.

KitGuru Says: Do you think Nvidia will end up pulling the trigger on this and acquiring ARM? It would be interesting to see the impact this would have on the mobile industry, in addition to Apple's recently announced plans to release ARM-powered Macs.
