PlayStation head of 3rd party claims “There are no dire times for the industry ahead”

The past few years in particular have felt pretty bleak for the video games industry, with the rise and fall of countless live-service games creating volatility, while the influx of gen-AI has led to continuous price hikes across the board. Despite all this, the head of 3rd parties at PlayStation ‘Christian Svensson’ has claimed that “there are no dire times for the industry ahead as far as I'm concerned.”

Taking part in an interview with the publication TheGameBusiness, Christian Svensson – the overseer of “all third-party and second-party activity” at PlayStation – spoke on a wide range of topics from the process of getting games onto PS5, the behind-the-scenes of State of Plays and more.

In looking at the future of the games industry, Svensson appears to have a much more positive outlook when compared to most fans, claiming:

“I'm in an incredibly privileged position to have amazing visibility into what games will be for the next 3, 4, 5 years. I literally cannot explain to you… last year was an amazing year for games. This year will be even better. Next year will be better still. The trajectory of content is unbelievably positive. And we as an industry should be super optimistic about where we're going in spite of the headwinds.”

Svensson continued, “Obviously the decisions we're making now take into account where we are at this moment, right? And anticipating where we're going to be over the next couple. There are no dire times for the industry ahead as far as I'm concerned. Very smart decisions are being made by our partners. Very smart decisions are being made by platforms. Be more comfortable than what you think you should be.”

Of course, the head of 3rd parties for one of the biggest entertainment platforms in the world would try to shy away from the doom and gloom which many of us are feeling right now. That said, here’s to hoping that Svensson’s claims are true and that come this time next year, the industry does not feel like it's on the precipice of an implosion.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
