The Last of Us Part II sells 4 million in 3 days

There was no denying that The Last of Us Part II was set to be a massive title for Sony. The first-party PS4 exclusive is the sequel to 2013’s 20-million-copy seller. Expectations were high for the game. Even so, its success is perhaps greater than anyone could have expected – as The Last of Us Part II has become Sony’s “fastest-selling PS4 exclusive ever” with over 4 million copies sold in 3 days.

Previously, we reported that The Last of Us Part II had become the biggest game of the year in the UK, beating out the likes of Animal Crossing when it came to physical launch sales. Now, PlayStation themselves have given greater details on just how successful Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic PS4 swansong was.

In a blog post, Eric Lempel, the Senior vice-president at PlayStation Worldwide Marketing, SIE announced that “We’re delighted to report that The Last of Us Part II is now the fastest-selling first-party PS4 exclusive ever with more than 4 million copies sold through as of June 21. This milestone would not have been reached without the support from our amazing fans, so on behalf of everyone at SIE, thank you!”

The director and writer of The Last of Us Part II, Neil Druckmann, offered his thoughts, saying “We are so immensely grateful to the millions of fans around the world that have played The Last of Us Part II and shared their experiences with us over the last week. We set out to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with difficult themes and would challenge you in unexpected ways. Hearing how the experience has resonated with so many of you and witnessing the type of thoughtful discussions it has sparked has been so incredible.”

Druckmann then thanked his team, saying “The Last of Us Part II was made possible thanks to the efforts of the hundreds of talented and passionate developers here at Naughty Dog. We can imagine no greater honor than seeing that same passion mirrored by the people playing it. Thank you for helping us reach this amazing milestone.”

For comparison’s sake, Marvel’s Spider-Man sold through 3.3 million copies in 3 days, with God of War following closely behind with 3.1 million copies in the same timeframe. Spider-Man went on to sell over 13.2 million copies as of August 2019, with God of War most recently reporting total sales of 10 million by May 2019. As previously mentioned, The Last of Us (2013) sold over 20 million units as of October 2019

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
