Face ID could be coming to Macs according to macOS beta code

Apple has been using its Face ID scanning technology on iPhones and iPads for a few years now. Meanwhile, Mac systems have been carrying on the legacy of Touch ID. That may start to change soon, with dataminers finding evidence that Face ID could be coming to Mac systems. 

As reported by 9To5Mac, sleuths have been digging through the code in the latest beta version of macOS Big Sur and during that search, references to Face ID were found.

The code references Apple's TrueDepth camera, which enables Face ID on supported devices like the iPhone and iPad. Macs currently don't have one, but code for BioCapture and FaceDetect indicate that this will change at some point.

We don't know specifically which Macs will be getting this new Face ID capable camera, but it could just as easily come to MacBooks as well as iMacs. This all lines up nicely with the next version of Safari, which is included with macOS Big Sur. In this version, you'll be able to use biometrics to log in to websites rather than entering a password.

KitGuru Says: There is still more we need to learn here, but Face ID coming to Macs seems like a safe bet. Perhaps we'll hear something official from Apple later this year.
