Android Wear is now compatible with iPhones

Several companies have launched Android Wear smart watches over the last year and while some of them do look pretty tempting, they are limited as far as platforms go. Now, iPhone users can buy an Android Wear smart watch thanks to an upcoming software update from Google.

There are some caveats, you will need an iPhone running iOS 8.2 and only iPhones as far back as the 5 are supported. This isn't entirely unexpected though, as the Apple Watch has similar hardware and software requirements.

On top of that, only certain Android Wear models are supported presently. The first of which is the LG Urbane, followed by upcoming watches from the likes of Asus, Motorola and Huawei. Older Android Wear devices won't be compatible with the upcoming iOS app if they don't run the latest version of the Android Wear software, so this will rule out some of the more popular devices.

However, as far as functionality goes, Android Wear paired with iOS should be pretty close to the experience you would get pairing with an Android device.

KitGuru Says: It will be interesting to see if Android Wear watches start to sell a bit more now that they aren't limited to the Android platform. As an iPhone user myself, I know that I'd rather use something like the Moto 360 rather than the Apple Watch.
