NieR Re[in]carnation launches next month

Though perhaps not the follow up to Automata that fans expected, NieR: Re[in]carnation is a free-to-play mobile title from creative director Yoko Taro. Previously only available in Japan, it has now been confirmed to be launching next month in the West.

Following the surprise success of NieR: Automata – which publisher Square Enix recently revealed has sold over 6 million copies – the action-rpg quickly turned into a franchise with other mediums embracing this unique IP. One of these mediums was the mobile market. Initially launched in February of this year in Japan, IGN has now revealed that NieR: Re[in]carnation will be coming to Western markets on the 28th of July 2021.

NieR: Re[in]carnation is a free-to-play action-RPG (with in-app purchases) which is described as follows: “A girl awakens on a cold stone floor. She finds herself in an infinitely vast place filled with buildings that touch the very sky. Guided by a mysterious creature who calls herself Mama, she begins to explore her new surroundings. To reclaim what she has lost—and atone for her sins—she sets off on a journey through this place of unknown creation….A place known as The Cage.”

Though some fans of NieR and Automata may be disappointed to see Re[in]carnation made exclusively for mobile devices, the project appears to be an ambitious one, with full voice acting and more. The game was also creatively directed by Yoko Taro himself, with music from Keiichi Okabe – the composer of NieR: Replicant and Automata.

While fans eagerly await official confirmation of a sequel to Automata, NieR: Re[in]carnation seems to feature as much intellectual depth, intrigue and Yoko Taro uniqueness as the mainline console entries.
