HP recalls 6 million laptop power cords due to fire risk

HP is currently recalling over six million laptop power cords world wide due to burn and fire risk. The faulty power cords were sold with both HP and Compaq laptops, 5,577,000 of them were sold in the US, 446,700 in Canada and the rest could be anywhere in the world as the company failed to deliver exact figures for other territories.

So far, the faulty cords have led to 29 reports of overheating, melting and charring, two claims of minor burns and thirteen further claims of property damage. The recall notice says:

“Customers should immediately stop using and unplug the recalled power cords and contact Hewlett-Packard to order a free replacement. Consumers can continue to use the computer on battery power.”

The recall specifically affects the LS-15 AC power cord, although HP's information page states that not every single LS-15 cord is faulty.
