Synology launches DS213j with Turbo Performance

Without doubt, Synology seems to be almost every geek’s NAS storage favourite. Whether you look at KitGuru or the mainstream print media, time after time it’s Synology that tops the charts. If you have to pick a ‘negative’, then it’s pure performance. That’s not just for Synology – but for all NAS solutions. Now there seems to be a new solution in town.

Synology claims that the brand new DS213j can deliver write speeds over 70MB/sec with read speeds that are more than 42% faster with data rates that can pass 100MB/sec.

Impressive claim.

Chad Jiang, Product Manager of Synology, said “With advanced hardware integration the DS213j is designed to work as an efficient private cloud for home and small office users, letting them access their stored data with ease”.

Chad claims “Unparalleled price-performance optimised for budget-minded users”, which we will be able to test in the KitGuru Labs soon enough.

In terms of general capabilities, the DS213J aims to make it easy to move big data. How big?  Chad thinks anyone can share a Blu-ray quality video in less than 3 minutes. How is that possible?  Well the built-in Floating-Point Unit (FPU) CPU and 512MB of RAM further enhance the performance of intensive applications, such as thumbnail creation and multitasking ensuring the user has the optimum experience.

He was also keen to point out that the new unit is very efficient, consuming only 3.65 watts when hard drives enter hibernation mode and no more than 20 watts under full load – with support for Wake on LAN/WAN etc.

As you would expect, the unit will be near silent – engineered with plenty of noise/vibration reduction features like rubber washers on the hard drive mounts.
