Over the past few weeks, leakers and dataminers have uncovered evidence that the classic PlayStation 3 era Black Ops titles (BO1 and BO2) are seemingly being brought over to PlayStation 4 / 5 in one form or another. Following plenty of speculation, the team at Treyarch have now come out and made it official – revealing that the port is set to launch some time next month.
Following discoveries by dataminers that PlayStation’s back-end servers had received seemingly new listings for Call of Duty Black Ops (2010) and Black Ops 2 (2012), there has been a ton of speculation of what this will entail; whether it’s a remaster, a port, or something else entirely.
While we have yet to get the full suite of answers, the project’s existence has now been officially confirmed, with Treyarch taking to Twitter to write: “It's official: the original Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are being ported to PlayStation in July, courtesy of our partners at @IronGalaxy. Both will include Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies.”
Though certainly an exciting prospect given the fact that PS3 era titles are unplayable on modern PlayStation consoles due to a lack of backwards-compatibility with the system, many questions remain as to the extent of this port.
Presumably, this new release will at the very least boost resolutions significantly when compared to the PS3 originals (which could run as low as 540p), but anything beyond this is still up in the air.
That said, while confirmed to not be a remaster, hopefully this port will bring with it at least a couple more enhancements; namely an FOV slider and perhaps a 120fps option. As of right now however, nothing has been detailed, and so for all we know it could remain a low-res, low-FOV aliased mess – though hopefully not.
Iron Galaxy has plenty of experience working on game ports, ranging from the console version of Sleeping Dogs back in 2010 to Borderlands 2 on PS Vita and more recently Metroid Prime Remastered for the Nintendo Switch.
Across its repertoire however, the studio has also had its fair share of stinkers, including the infamous PC versions of Batman Arkham Knight and The Last of Us Part 1.
All that being said, it will be nice to finally have access to these classic COD entries in any form on a modern PlayStation console – though a few enhancements wouldn’t go amiss.
