Mafia II and III appear to finally be getting native current-gen ports

Back in August, 2K Games announced and subsequently released Mafia: The Omerta Collection – a repacking of all four Mafia games designed for current-gen platforms. Despite this, only the first game in the OG trilogy (Mafia: Definitive Edition) actually received a native current-gen port, with 2 and 3 still operating via backwards compatibility. In a move which is better late than never, it appears as though Mafia II and III will soon be getting their own native current-gen ports / remasters.

As reported by Twitter user Wario64, new ESRB listings for both Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition have been published, with their target platforms being stated as PS5 / Xbox Series. This seems to mirror August’s announcement, where-in an ESRB listing for current-gen versions of the first Mafia popped up just days before being officially announced by 2K.

For the uninitiated, Mafia: Definitive Edition was a full-blown remake of the 2002 PS2 / Xbox original. Released in the fall of 2020, the game just missed out on the launch of the PS5 and Series X|S and so did not receive a native current-gen port until the aforementioned Omerta Collection.

Mafia II Current-gen

Mafia II: Definitive Edition meanwhile was more of a remaster than a remake, owing to the fact that the original game released in 2010 for the PS3 / Xbox 360 generation. Launching back in the Summer of 2020, it too missed out on the PS5 / Xbox Series’ launch and so remains locked to 1440p and 30fps via backwards compatibility.

Last but also least, Mafia III: Definitive Edition is little more than a repackaging of the 2016 original with all of its DLC included. Given this, it too remains limited by its PS4 / Xbox One backwards compatibility – though in this case is even worse due to it suffering from notable visual glitches on PS5.

It was always odd that 2K released the Omerta Collection in what felt like an incomplete form, and so it is encouraging at the very least to see that both Mafia II and III are indeed getting native current-gen versions. Hopefully all those who own the Omerta Collection will be offered these enhanced releases for free upon their official arrivals.
