SEGA announces surprise Golden Axe animated show coming to Paramount+

Ever since the successful revival of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, SEGA has been working to bring back many of its classic and long-forgotten IPs. One such series is Golden Axe, whose return was confirmed back in 2023. Alongside the upcoming game however, an animated TV show has now been announced for Paramount+.

Releasing an official trailer, SEGA / Paramount announced Golden Axe – an animated show based on the 1989 side-scrolling beat ‘em up. Set to debut on Paramount+ in a few weeks’ time on the 16th of September, Golden Axe appears to be surprisingly competent, featuring solid animation, distinct characters and a clear plot.

The show is being co-created by Mike McMahan and Joe Chandler who are known for working on a variety of adult animated series including Star Trek: Lower Decks; American Dad and Solar Opposites, meaning it will likely include plenty of meta and self-deprecating humour.

While what little we saw of the upcoming game itself did not ignite much excitement, this Golden Axe show does show plenty of promise. The synopsis for the series reads as follows:

“Golden Axe follows legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder, who just won't seem to stay dead. Their quest is complicated by Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and wildly underprepared adventurer whose dream of heroism far exceeds his abilities. Forced to work together despite their flaws, they must find a way to stop Death Adder once and for all.”

KitGuru says: What do you think of the trailer? Will you check the show out? Is this a smart way for SEGA to bring back older franchises? Let us know down below.
