Sony confirms the PlayStation 2 sold 160 million units

The PlayStation 2 has sat at the top of the video game console best-sellers list ever since the system was first introduced, with the decades-old console managing to move over 155 million units. That said, this figure had remained more of an estimate for years – up until a few months ago when the ex-PlayStation CEO offered more concrete figures. Though an offhand comment at the time, the PS2’s official final sale figures have now been revealed.

Back in April, the then-CEO of PlayStation Jim Ryan revealed during an episode of the official PlayStation Podcast that the PlayStation 2 had sold  160 million units – 5 million more than the previous estimates.

This updated figure has now been set in stone, with Sony publishing a full timeline of PlayStation’s history, confirming that the PlayStation 2 has officially sold a total of 160 million units.

PlayStation 2 Million

While not the biggest revelation in the world, this does mean that the Nintendo Switch’s journey to the top of the video game console best-sellers list has been extended slightly.

That said, given that Nintendo’s system is currently at 146 million units sold, it will likely take the top stop regardless in the not-too-distant future.
