As we all know, both Sony and Microsoft chose to release next gen systems with 500GB HDD's. That doesn't sound so bad at first, but UK managing director of Sony, Fergal Gara, has just revealed that Killzone: Shadow fall will require 50GB of space to install. That's huge by anyone's standards- no wonder Sony wasn't pushing digital only gaming.

Fergal assured gamers however, that while digital gaming was growing, people looking to take advantage of downloading the game, wouldn't need to wait for the whole thing before playing – they could get started much sooner than that.

“The Play as you Download functionality, for example, means you don't need the whole file before you go. This is a little bit counterbalanced by the fact that the files themselves are getting bloody big. Killzone: Shadow Fall is an uber file–I think it's cracking on for 50GB. It looks it, too, when you see it.”

You could let the download sit there for a while until it's about 10-20% done and then start playing as the download continues. The only downside is, if you're on a slower connection you may catch up to the download faster than it can finish and we don't know if this will cause any graphical errors or weird game bugs.

For those worried about their hard drives filling up fast with massive game files, don't worry, like the PS3, the PS4 hard drive will be upgradeable. If you plan on mostly downloading your games from the PSN store then maybe you should think about budgeting for a 1TB HDD to last you longer.

KitGuru Says: I wasn't expecting the game file to be so big, but the play as you download feature should alleviate some of the waiting time for digital buyers. Being able to upgrade the HDD helps too as you will always be able to get more space. Were you surprised at how big Killzone is?
