Nintendo Switch tops the U.S. sales charts once again

Despite constant dips in stock, the Nintendo Switch has continuously outsold the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as of late. This month is no different, with the hybrid topping September’s sales in the U.S. according to industry tracking groups.

The NPD Group, responsible for market research across the world has pegged the Switch as the best-selling console of September, with Nintendo’s hybrid having sold around 2 million units in the U.S. alone since it launched back in March. In its 7-month lifespan, the Switch has managed to top NPD’s charts for 5 of them, with September marking its third consecutive month.

The Switch is not Nintendo’s only platform to be doing well for itself, as the SNES Classic Mini has been selling like hotcakes since its September release despite also frequently dropping in availability. Surprisingly, two-thirds of all gaming hardware sold throughout September is still attributed to the company’s 6-year-old 3DS line.

Nintendo games have also topped the charts, with four of its titles within the top 11. The Wii U port of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was at the 11th spot, followed closely by Switch launch title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at number 10. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle faired a little better given that it is a newer title in Nintendo’s roster, coming in at number 7, alongside the 3DS’s Metroid: Samus Returns taking 8th place.

It’s expected that Nintendo will encroach the number 1 spot later this month with the release of Super Mario Odyssey on October 27th, which is more likely to sell further throughout November’s period. It will also be interesting to see how well more mature titles fair with the Switch’s existing audience and how it will affect Nintendo’s placement when Doom lands on the console this coming November.

KitGuru Says: It’s unsurprising that a newer console is faring better than ones that have been available for almost 4 years now, but the way in which Nintendo holds onto strong 3DS sales is astounding for the aging platform. Do you own anything Nintendo? Personally, I’ll be grabbing Mario on launch.
