GTA 6 devs confirm return to Miami, game is at least two years away

Rockstar has said very little publicly about Grand Theft Auto 6. The only official update we've had so far is confirmation that the game is in development. We've seen plenty of rumours about Grand Theft Auto 6 over the past couple of years but few legitimate leaks. Now thanks to a new report from Jason Schreier, we have our first real insight into the game's development.

In an article primarily focused on Rockstar's internal culture changes, citing multiple sources within Rockstar, Schreier reveals that Grand Theft Auto 6 was initially going to feature a map spanning multiple areas of North America and South America. However, following sweeping changes to internal practices and a new no-crunch policy, this idea was scaled back to a more manageable map focused on a fictional version of Miami (Vice City) and some of its surrounding areas.

Grand Theft Auto 6 will also feature a pair of lead protagonists, one of which will be female, inspired by Bonnie and Clyde. While some compromises have been made to bring the game within a manageable scope, something that is common in game development, progress has apparently been slower than anticipated in the no-crunch era for Rockstar.

The company as a whole is still adjusting and a number of leadership changes have also been made across Rockstar. Many employees are happy with the new approach and more relaxed schedule, but some have left due to slow progress. While analysts expect Grand Theft Auto 6 to slot into Take-Two's 23-24 fiscal year, developers currently working on the game say it is at least two years away.

KitGuru Says: If GTA 6 is still another couple of years away, then we should be looking at a release somewhere between 2024 and 2025, but developers also said there is no firm release window. One thing is for sure, Rockstar won't reveal the game until it is nearing the final phase of development.
