Elon Musk wants his next SpaceX rocket to take you anywhere on earth in under an hour

Shortly after revealing the official SpaceX spacesuits, Elon Musk has unveiled more of his ambitious plans for the company. Not only had SpaceX revealed new plans to travel to the Moon and Mars, but Musk also wants to use his rockets for long distance travel on earth, taking passengers anywhere on the planet in under an hour.

Musk is proposing that SpaceX's upcoming rocket, codenamed ‘BFR', be used to carry a spaceship into orbit around the Earth. From there, the ship would fly back down and land on a floating landing pad. These landing pads would be placed near most major cities to make travel convenient. According to Musk, a ticket to “anywhere on Earth in under an hour” should cost the same as the price of an economy airline ticket.

Right now, the concept is theoretical but SpaceX will begin construction on the BFR at some point in the next six to nine months. You can get a rough idea of what Elon Musk is going for in the concept video above.

By using rockets for travel around Earth, Musk reckons you could get from London to New York in 29 minutes, or from Hong Kong to Singapore in 22 minutes, or even from Los Angeles to Toronto in 24 minutes. This would be the fastest form of city to city travel ever created, with speeds of around 18,000 miles per hour at its peak.

KitGuru Says: It is still going to be many years before something like this comes to fruition but still, it is very exciting to see that this is something being worked on. Hopefully Elon Musk will have more information to unveil next year, when the BFR starts construction.
