While Sony’s 2024 remake of the Supermassive Games classic Until Dawn did not quite make the splash that the console maker may have been hoping for, it appears as though the release was all part of a larger plan. Following various leaks and rumours, PlayStation have now officially announced Until Dawn 2, featuring a brand new cast in a tropical island location.
Making the official announcement during Sony’s recent State of Play showcase, the console maker unveiled Until Dawn 2. Set to arrive some time next year, this sequel features a brand new cast of characters who are said to be fake ghost-hunting content creators. Of course, things go south and the group then need to try and survive whatever comes their way.
Being a story-focused experience, we did not get many details regarding gameplay, though the trailer did showcase one instance of players having to make a split-second choice. As with the first game, all of the characters can die, and all of them can survive depending on your choices made throughout.
While perhaps not a complete surprise due to prior leaks, the announcement also confirmed that Until Dawn 2 is being developed by an entirely different studio to the original and even the remake, with Firesprite said to be taking on the task.
For the uninitiated, Firesprite is a relatively new part of PlayStation Studios, being acquired back in 2021. Under Sony, the company has released the PSVR 2 exclusive Horizon Call of the Mountain, and was tasked with making a new Twisted Metal game – before being ultimately cancelled.
Given the studio’s VR-ladden roots, it will be interesting to see whether the team manage to successfully bring Until Dawn back into the limelight – and whether it will include support for virtual reality.
