Sony begins selling off its VR patents to Meta

Sony appears to have completely given up on its PlayStation VR efforts. According to new US patent and trademark office records, Sony has just sold off a bunch of its VR patents to Meta.

ZDNet Korea was the first to spot the paperwork, finding that Sony has sold around 43 VR-related patents to Meta, but there are plans to shift as many as 400 VR patents from Sony to Meta according to an agreement signed in late 2025.

This would confirm something we've all suspected for a while now – Sony is done with VR. The PlayStation VR2 ended up launching at a higher price than the console needed to use it, and Sony quickly stopped producing first-party content for the system. At this point, it is unclear how many PSVR2 users are left but with Sony selling off its patents, we likely won't see a PSVR 3 for the next-gen PlayStation.

We also don't know which of Sony's patents Meta plans to utilise in a consumer product. We could potentially see some of that tech put to use in the next-gen Quest VR headset.

KitGuru Says: VR hasn't really taken off in the way many thought it would back in 2015. Sony gave it a good effort with the first-gen PSVR but couldn't find meaningful growth with its second-generation VR product.
