Sony has sold 70 million PS4s, 617 million games and 2 million VR headsets

This time last year, Sony revealed that it had managed to sell over 50 million PS4s so far this generation. This announcement closely followed the launches of the PS4 Pro and PSVR, so how has Sony's hardware been doing since then? Well unsurprisingly, it is still selling at an incredibly fast rate.

Today, Sony announced that it has managed to sell 70.6 million PS4 consoles worldwide as of the 3rd of December. We unfortunately don't know the split between the base PS4 and the Pro version. Meanwhile, just over one year on the market, the PlayStation VR headset has also managed to carve out a decent chunk of the market, with Sony selling two million headsets as of this month. This is a big jump from June's numbers, which pinned PSVR sales at close to the one million mark.

Given the huge user base of PS4 hardware, game sales are very high. According to Sony, 617.8 million copies of games have been sold for the PS4 so far both at retail and digitally. On the PSVR side of things, PS4 owners have bought 12.2 million VR games, spread out over 150 different titles so far.

Over the next year, Sony will be expanding its software offerings with some impressive exclusives. These include the new God of War, Detroit: Become Human, Spider-Man, the Shadow of the Colossus remake and Days Gone. There is no mention of The Last of Us Part II coming next year, so don't get your hopes up for that arriving in the next 12 months.

KitGuru Says: Sony has been doing incredibly well this entire console generation, so the PS4 sales numbers aren't too surprising. However, it is nice to see that VR headset sales are growing, with two million owners already on board. As newer, better games trickle out that number should increase.
