Oculus Quest 2 removes support for Oculus Go apps

At this point, Facebook has made it clear that the Oculus Go and Oculus Rift headsets are on borrowed time, with plans to focus on the Oculus Quest going forward. Unfortunately, that also means backwards compatibility with older apps is also going to become an issue. 

The original Oculus Quest could run apps intended for the Oculus Go. Unfortunately, the new Quest 2 does now, as confirmed by John Carmack:

Support was remove on Quest 2. I totally lost the internal debate over backwards compatibility.

It looks like Carmack, who spearheaded projects like the GearVR and Oculus Go, attempted to keep Go support in for Quest 2 but when push came to shove, he was outvoted.

Developers that created apps for the Go are being left behind, unless they rework the app and resubmit it to the Oculus Store as a Quest 2 application.

KitGuru Says: Now that Oculus has decided to push all of its focus onto the Quest line, hopefully this is an issue that won't creep up again. After all, it is going to be hard to convince people to invest long-term if software only lasts a year or two. Still, this is a shame for previous Go owners and Quest owners that used Go apps.
