Since her appointment as the new CEO of Xbox, Asha Sharma has been doing a lot and saying even more when it comes to how she plans to make Xbox the number one platform for gaming. In looking towards the next generation, Sharma has reiterated that the in-development Xbox Helix will be more than just a single console and will instead consist of “a family of devices.”
As reported by the publication WindowsCentral, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma recently held an internal town hall meeting with the Xbox team to discuss a range of topics from the current generation of devices to what’s in store for the future.
Unsurprisingly, the meeting included plenty of profound self-congratulatory messaging, with Sharma stating: “Why do we exist? We exist to be where the world plays, we will know when we have a billion daily active people, and we have a right to win because we're now focused on our fans and franchises.”
Being a publicly traded Trillion Dollar corporation, Microsoft / Xbox is of course first and foremost beholden to its shareholders with the goal of maximising profits at any cost. That’s not to say that efforts aren’t being made to try and win back core fans.
Far more interesting however was Sharma’s statement regarding the console-maker’s next generation ‘Project Helix’. While not the first time to be suggested, the CEO reiterated the fact that Xbox’s next-gen system will in fact be a family of devices, claiming:
“We are moving to a family of devices for Gen-10. There is not one device that fits all. We will certainly have a great console first, but we also know that many players will be on the go. There are some things that we are the best in the world to manufacture, and there are other things that we will partner on. So, we will be sharing more about that as our plans develop. The operating system is starting to look really good. We're very excited about this.”
Though we will have to wait and see what this means precisely, the wording used seems to suggest that as with this current generation, Microsoft might be partnering with other hardware manufacturers to once again develop a handheld Xbox of sorts – with its OS being the main USP which ties the devices together.
Either way, with how tumultuous the industry is right now especially when it comes to hardware component costs, the future of both Xbox and PlayStation is likely to be somewhat influx. Sharma’s full town hall statements can be found HERE.
