If you have been following VR development over the years, then you may know that back in the 90's Nintendo tried to bring virtual reality to the masses with the Virtual Boy. The console didn't take off and things on the VR front went quiet for many years. However, the technology is set to make a resurgence in 2016, with the Oculus Rift and Sony's PlayStation VR so it looks like Nintendo might be interested once again.
In a briefing with investors that took place this week, Nintendo said that it was “looking into” virtual reality once again. However, no further details were provided during the call, so we don't know how this will fit into Nintendo's future plans.
We do know that Nintendo said that there is no change in plans for its smartphone app rollout and with the company's bigger focus on mobile, maybe we'll see a mobile-focussed VR device like Samsung's Gear VR, rather than something console or PC based like the Oculus or PlayStation VR. That said, this is all speculation at this point.
Nintendo does have another big console coming up soon known as the Nintendo NX though not much is known about it at this time.
KitGuru Says: Nintendo's first attempt at virtual reality didn't play out too well but considering how far the technology has come since then, maybe we will see Nintendo return to it in the next couple of years.
