Obsidian announces Grounded release date and new RPG ‘Pentiment’

While we didn't get any new information on Avowed or The Outer Worlds 2 during the Xbox and Bethesda showcase this evening, we did get new reveals for two other projects Obsidian is working on. Obsidian will have two games launching this year – Grounded and Pentiment.

Grounded initially released in Early Access back in 2020 and it quickly grew to 10 million players and gained an active following. The Garden has had plenty of upgrades over the last couple of years, but Obsidian has kept all new story campaign content out of these Early Access updates. With the game's full release this year, we'll finally be getting all of the features unlocked.

Grounded will leave Early Access and fully release on Xbox and PC in September. The big 1.0 update will include the full campaign, in which a group of teenagers try to find the mad scientist responsible for shrinking them and attempting to survive the dangers of the backyard along the way.

If you typically enjoy survival games, then be sure to give Grounded a shot. I was heavily impressed, so much so that I stopped playing so that I could savour the game for its full release. If you only kind-of enjoy survival games, then also give it a shot. I fall into the latter camp but Grounded does so many things that clicked with me.

Aside from Grounded, we also got our first look at Josh Sawyer's new RPG. We learned some time ago that Obsidian director, Josh Sawyer, is working on a new IP, and now that game has been officially announced as Pentiment.

The game takes place in 16th century Bavaria and takes players on a narrative journey through the eyes of Andreas Maler, an artist during a time of great social unrest. There will be a series of murders, and you'll find yourself tangled in the case and looking to unravel the mystery.

Pentiment will be releasing on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC in November.

KitGuru Says: I was a little put off by the art style of Pentiment, but the story does sound interesting. I don't typically enjoy survival games a ton, but Grounded had me hooked at its Early Access launch, so that will be a day-one install for me. What do you think of Obsidian's upcoming titles for 2022?
