Sony has no major first-party exclusives planned for PS5 in 2024

We've had very few tentpole games on the calendar for 2024 from PlayStation. Unfortunately, it sounds like the situation won't change much in the months ahead, as Sony has confirmed it will not be releasing a ‘major franchise' game this year.

Sony's latest earnings report results are in. In the last quarter of the 2023 calendar year, around 8.2 million PS5 consoles were shipped, an improvement over the 7.1 million consoles shipped in the final months of 2022. However, Sony has had to revise its targets a bit. While Sony anticipated selling 25 million consoles this fiscal year, it has since revised this to 21 million console sales for the year.

Sony may not sell quite as many PS5 units in 2024 either, as the company has confirmed it has no “major franchise titles” on the way this year. Instead, the focus will be on smaller or new IP, with games like Until Dawn Remake and Concord, with no games on the level of God of War or Spider-Man planned.

While that may sound bad at first, Sony is in a comfortable position in the console market. Due to the large PlayStation userbase, Sony has been able to snap up a few promising third-party exclusives for the year, including titles like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Rise of Ronin and Stellar Blade.

KitGuru Says: Sony managed to over deliver during the PS4 generation, with massive exclusives each year. With game development timelines lengthening and certain projects not panning out, like The Last of Us Factions, it isn't too surprising to see a quiet year for Sony's first-party teams.
