Sony unveils and launches new ad-supported ‘Live TV’ app

While its gaming segment makes up a major slice of Sony’s corporate pie, the console maker is of course quite familiar with other mediums including music, film and TV. Seemingly in an effort to synergise its services, Sony has now announced a new ad-supported ‘Live TV’ app for the PlayStation 5 – premiering in the US.

Taking to their blog to make the surprise announcement, Sony unveiled their new Live TV initiative for PS5, writing:

“Starting later today, Live TV on PS5 will be available to PS5 players in the U.S., offering a free ad-supported experience from Sony Pictures Television. Players can discover more than 100 live channels and a growing selection of on-demand entertainment including news, sports, movies, TV shows, anime and more – all from the Media section of the PS5 console.”

As mentioned, this program is currently only running in the US. For those who do reside in the region however, the app should already be listed under the ‘Media Tab’ on your console.

Though a full line-up of channels has not been shared, Live TV will include seemingly everything from weather to Anime; reality TV to ‘prestige’ shows; sports; podcasts; documentaries and more.

Live TV is currently live in the US, with Sony stating that they are “looking to expand the experience to Canada and will continue to explore additional regions”. Full details on the service can be found HERE.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this initiative? Will it catch on? After a decade+ of on-demand streaming, would you welcome a resurgence of live tv? Let us know down below.
