The Switch is on pace to become the best selling home console ever

With each new fiscal announcement from Nintendo, it is continually reaffirmed that the company’s latest console – the Switch – is an overwhelming success. Going from strength to strength, it has now been revealed that Nintendo’s console-handheld hybrid is on pace to become the best selling home console of all time.

As part of Nintendo’s most recent financial report, the console manufacturer revealed that the Switch has sold 79.87 million units as of the 31st of December 2020. Having surpassed the 3DS’ 75.94 million units, the Switch is well on its way to becoming one of the best-selling Nintendo video game systems of all time.

Outside of Nintendo, the Switch is also currently performing at a record pace. As reported by industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, the Nintendo Switch is currently the best selling home console of all time when its launch is aligned with all other home consoles.

Of course, just because it is on pace to outsell the PlayStation 2’s 155+ million units sold, doesn’t mean it actually will. The PlayStation 2 had famously long legs, and while Nintendo has yet to offer any updates on a potential Switch successor, the hardware itself is beginning to lag far behind its competitors.

Regardless, the Nintendo Switch is undeniably a major success story for Nintendo, and with no indication that the console’s sales are slowing down, it will be interesting to see just how many units the company sells when all is said and done.
