PS2 Emulator hits major milestone with version 2.0

There’s been a lot of positive movements within the emulation scene as of late, with the most recent breakthrough seeing the PS4 emulator ShadPS4 being able to boot Bloodborne up to the character creator screen. Looking at much more mature emulation platforms, the popular PS2 emulator PCSX2 has now officially reached version 2.0

Making the announcement on their site, the PCSX2 team shared this latest milestone, saying “It has been over four years since the last stable PCSX2 revision released. A lot of things can happen in four years, but we could not have predicted just how much progress would be made in that time. PCSX2 has received over 6000 changes, passed 100 million downloads, and celebrated its 20th anniversary!”

With that, as was the case most recently with the GameCube/Wii emulator Dolphin, the team revealed that future updates will be offered via rolling releases, as opposed to stable/nightly builds.

One of the biggest changes with version 2.0 is the overhauled UI. Beyond this, the update also removes the outdated plugin system; increased automation for easier set up; per-game settings and much much more. The full list of changes is extensive and covers all different aspects of the software – both user and developer-facing.

With game preservation becoming an increasingly important topic, it is encouraging to see more and more emulators reach such a mature state.
