Riot will team up with third-party developers for new League of Legends games

League of Legends has been around for a decade now and during that time, plenty of interesting character lore has been written but due to the competitive MOBA format, those stories haven't been fully explored. That is starting to change, with Riot today announcing a new publishing group working with third-party developers to create brand new games that expand on the League of Legends universe.

Riot Forge will publish new games and experiences from third-party developers who want to “engage with the League of Legends Universe in different genres on various platforms”. These games won't replace the ‘live service' titles developed internally at Riot and will instead be positioned to complement them and get more players invested in the IP.

“We are always looking for new ways to bring the World of Runeterra and its champions to new and existing audiences around the world,” said Greg Street, VP of IP and Entertainment at Riot Games. “There are so many talented game studios around the world that have exceptional experience and craft skills in all areas of game development, and we are really excited to work together to bring the LoL IP to new game experiences.”

The first Riot Forge published game will be announced next Thursday during The Game Awards, as confirmed by Geoff Keighley last night. Riot also has its own new games in the works, with several new projects being announced during the League of Legends 10th Anniversary celebration in October.

KitGuru Says: League of Legends is still one of the biggest games in the world, so it will be interesting to see how successful the IP ends up being while branching out into single-player, story-driven content. What do you all think of this latest move by Riot?
