Microsoft discontinued Xbox One consoles in late 2020 but no one knew

While Sony has reportedly delayed discontinuing the PlayStation 4 to compensate for the lack of PlayStation 5 consoles, it turns out that Microsoft discontinued its previous-gen consoles in late 2020, soon after the Series X|S launch.

That's according to The Verge, who had a word with Cindy Walker, senior director of Xbox console product marketing. In a statement, Walker confirmed that “to focus on production of Xbox Series X / S, [Microsoft] stopped production for all Xbox One consoles by the end of 2020”.

We already knew that the Xbox One X and S digital edition had been discontinued in mid-2020, but there was no word regarding the standard Xbox One S. Now, we know the console was discontinued soon after the launch of the Series X|S, in late 2020.

Despite Microsoft discontinuing the previous-gen consoles, it is not quite the same situation that Sony is in. The PlayStation 5 is the Japanese company's only next-gen console, but Microsoft obviously has Series models. So while Xbox Series X and the PS5 tend to be hard to find, the Series S isn't, so Microsoft's discontinuation of the One S appears justified.
