Elite Dangerous: Odyssey won’t have VR support at launch

Last week, the next major expansion for Elite Dangerous was announced, offering players the opportunity to get out of their spaceships and stretch their legs on the surface of planets. Unfortunately, unlike the Horizons expansion, Odyssey will not have VR support at launch.

Elite Dangerous has been one of the top-played VR-supported titles for years now, but most of that involved being fixed in your pilot chair. With Odyssey, players will be leaving their ships and going on tactical FPS missions. It is a very different type of content for the game and as a result, extra time will be needed to figure out how to translate it to Virtual Reality.

The news comes from Elite Dangerous community manager, Tim Smith, who wrote the following on the game's official forum:

“Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.”

The base game and Horizons expansions will continue to support VR and eventually, Odyssey should also get support too. Elite Dangerous: Odyssey launches in ‘early 2021'.

KitGuru Says: I pretty much exclusively played Elite Dangerous in VR, but I do see where the complications come in given how different some of this new content is. Hopefully after launch, we'll learn more about the possible addition of VR support.

KitGuru Games: Predicting the Next Half a Decade of Call of Duty Releases

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) famously once said: “The three absolutes in life are death, taxes and a new Call of Duty coming out every single year”. Sure enough, the US founding father has yet to be proven wrong, with Activision and a dozen studios having ensured that come the tail-end of any given year, there will be a new COD ready to release. And so, what can we expect from the franchise later this year? What about 2027, 2028 or even 2030? By looking back at the past two decades of Call of Duty games, their trends, progression and regression, I believe I can predict the next 5 years worth of annual COD entries.
