Whatever your thoughts on Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines, one thing they did get right with it, was the sounds of the assault rifles and that's commendable, even if the rest of the game isn't. And that's because sound in the Alien universe is incredibly important. The original film's orchestral score and all its funny little noises were part of the reason it was so terrifying and lonely. That's something Creative Assembly is really taking into consideration with Alien: Isolation, trying to nail that feel of truly being alone with your own thoughts and the sounds of something hunting you.

With such an auditory legacy as it has making an Alien game, Creative Assembly put together its own orchestra for sound recording, even managing to secure some of the artists that played on the original Alien movie soundtrack. Other sounds we see being created with foley work – stamping on a shower basin, crushing fruit etc.

Who knew the soundtrack to your demise could be so beautiful?

But all of this sound, the scratches and scrabbles and even the orchestral stings, are important to survival. When you're hiding in the dark, listening out for the Xenomorph may be your only chance.

Just to amp up the tension even more too, the game's soundtrack knows when you're hiding and will deliberately make the music more urgent and threatening.
